Game, set and match - how to ace your interview!

Tennis fever has hit the nation again as the best in the business battle it out for the Wimbledon crown. 

We've already had plenty of excitement, elation and upset as players try to deliver that stand out performance.

Like big matches, interviews are an occasion where we all want to perform at our peak. We need to able to calm those nerves, focus and communicate our key skills and experience.


We bring you 6 tips to help you ace that interview and secure your ideal role.

1. Be prepared

Top tennis players are well known for their meticulous tournament preparation -the truth is that this groundwork is rarely, if ever wasted. 

This also applies to interviews, so make sure that you research the company and the position thoroughly before the interview begins. 

This doesn’t mean that you can’t ask questions about the role, but do try to find out everything you can. This will also help you to go into the interview with confidence.

2. Be Enthusiastic

Put yourself in the position of the interviewer for a second – would you want to employ someone who seemed ‘luke-warm’ about the opportunity? - Of course not, so it’s important to convey your enthusiasm for both the role and the organisation. 

This means being ready to look the interviewer in the eye and explain how much you want to work for them and why. Employers want to know that they are hiring someone with a genuine desire for the position. 

3. Perfect your elevator pitch

Illustrate how your skills and experience make you a good fit for the role but try to do this succinctly. Think about it as putting together an elevator pitch to convey your suitability for the role.

Within this, you need to emphasise how you can help your employer – they need to be convinced that you will make a valid contribution to their team.

4. Give specific examples

Hiring managers like to see evidence of your accomplishments, so prepare 3 or 4 specific examples to show how you have tackled challenges and surpassed goals in the past. Back these up with figures where possible. 

It sounds far better to say I increased sales by 10% in Q1 this year, rather than simply “I increased sales’. Equally, if you believe that you're a team player, be ready share specific examples of when you have demonstrated this.

5. Ask Questions

Aim to arrive at the interview armed will a good list of follow-up questions that will help clarify your understanding of both the organisation and position.

Asking thoughtful questions will allow you to really show your initiative, and demonstrate your interest in the role. Good examples are ‘How could I really make a difference here in my first three months?’ or ‘What key challenges is the company/department currently facing and how could I help?’.

6. Practice Makes Perfect

Yes, you can practice for an interview. Running through common interview questions with family members and friends can be invaluable, even if they aren’t familiar with your particular industry. 

Practice will not only help you to deliver answers on demand but also to consider your delivery, posture and body language.

Pulling it all together

Interviews may seem intimidating; however always try to view them as an opportunity. And Remember, interviews should always be a two way process  - you are interviewing the company, just as they are interviewing you.

Above all try to stay calm and focus on your strengths. Getting match experience will help to build your technique and you should be acing that interview in no time!
