Fifteen Minutes with Jo Pocock

On24/ 03 /17
Jo Pocock is the Financial Controller for Bucks and Berks Recruitment.

She has been with the company for 23 years so has seen plenty of change in Bucks and Berks and in recruitment itself over her time in the business.

Jo started as an accounts assistant, paying temps and dealing with the purchase ledger. She has been an invaluable support to the business within the finance team and has worked her way up to head up the department.

She is always on hand to help with any financial query and has taken the time to give us a little insight into the department and her day.

What is the first thing you do when you get in?

Turn on my computer, make tea, check my emails, check my “to do list”.  Then the day begins, hopefully with no unexpected urgent requests.
How do you like to plan your day?

I live by the list.  It helps me to keep on top of the varied tasks throughout the day and prioritise those urgent tasks.  There is no average day, but across a month I am involved in everything financial for the company from running payroll for temporary candidates once a week to producing monthly management accounts for the board of Directors.  Then there is quarter end and year end!
I like being able to see the final picture and summing up the company performance in a clear and quantifiable way.  I like that fact that I can do this for a company with such great people from the top down.  Enjoying my job is as much about enjoying where I work and who I work with, which is why I have been here so long I guess!

What is the most interesting role you have worked on?

I don’t work on roles in the same way that the consultants do, but it was very entertaining to send out invoices for Christmas Elves one year!

What is the best or most interesting job you have ever done?

For a while I was Quality Auditor for the company.  This meant that I had to read through all the comments both internally and externally about our service.  It was great to get an insight into what people thought and it was interesting!

What is your biggest frustration?

Printers!! An old colleague once said they were aliens from another planet sent to create chaos!  I have to agree, they never seem to do what I need them to when I am in a rush and I am not technical enough to work out why!
What is the best bit of advice you would give any new employee?
Listen to your mentor & soak up as much of their knowledge & experience as you can. Always be the best version of yourself, but if you’ve had a bad day don’t beat yourself up, we aren’t brain surgeons, treat the next day as a fresh start.

What is the best thing about working for Bucks and Berks Recruitment?
The people, the positive energy & environment.

What do you do when you get home after work?

I have two teenage sons so after work between my husband & I we play taxi driver, chef, house keeper & dog walker.  My sons & husband are all musical so I spend a lot of time at their concerts.  In our family time we are working our way through our old box sets so far we’ve watched Red Dwarf, Friends & we are now watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  My “me time” is spent doing girly things with friends.
